Hygrophorus marzuolus var. albus

Morphological Features:

Pileus measuring approximately 10 cm in diameter in the photographed specimen, satin-white in color, without any shading of other colors, completely uniform. Initially convex and later flattened, with an undulate margin. Its cuticle is rather dry or slightly viscid, smooth.

Lamellae rather distant, pure white in color; despite being a fully developed specimen, at this stage of development the type species exhibits greyish lamellae, slightly decurrent.

Stipe central, cylindrical, thick and compact, also white in color as is the rest of the fruitbody, without greyish shading.

Flesh white and tender, thick as in the type species, with a faint odor and a mild, pleasant taste.

Habitat:

Collected in a mixed pine and beech forest, we have observed it on several occasions in the same area. It was gathered at the end of March, that is to say, early spring. In that same area, the type species occurs abundantly.

Observations:

We have not found this variety in any mycological treatise, which we consider interesting enough to present to you. We have located it on several occasions in the Sierra de Cameros, in La Rioja; fortunately, this time we brought a camera and were able to photograph it. The photographed specimen was visible, not covered by leaf litter, and was fully developed, mature, and quite large, incidentally. Other white forms of numerous species exist and are recognized, so why not this one?
