Lyophyllum decastes

Morphological Features:

Pileus 5–10 cm, smooth or finely striate, brownish-grey to dark brownish-grey, paler in older specimens. Initially quite gibbous but gradually flattening to become plane, with the margin incurved in young specimens.

Lamellae white in young specimens, becoming somewhat greyish with age, adnate and easily separable from the pileal flesh.

Stipe whitish to cream-colored, frequently streaked with grey; when fasciculate, often curved or sinuous, sometimes cylindrical.

Flesh whitish and elastic in consistency, a common characteristic of the genus Lyophyllum, with a faint odor and mild taste.

Habitat:

Typically appears in fasciculate clusters during spring, and particularly from October onwards. Regarding its location, the literature describes it as a species of broadleaf forests with a herbaceous understory, although we must note that we consistently find it in open clearings and along the edges of paths in mountain pine forests. A frequent species.

Observations:

Despite the toughness of its flesh, we consider it a good edible. Lyophyllum fumosum resembles it closely, but typically has grey lamellae and a more farinaceous odor; it also grows fasciculate and is equally edible.
