Clavulinopsis fusiformis

Morphological Features:

Basidiocarp sulfur-yellow in color, more or less vivid depending on the condition of the specimens; young, well-hydrated individuals exhibit a striking coloration, whereas old and dry ones acquire dull tones and even ochraceous hues. Occurs as independent individuals arranged in fascicles, each measuring between 5 and 10 cm in height, with a thickness that can reach half a centimeter. Elongate-fusiform in shape, generally cylindrical or laterally compressed, but typically not sulcate. Surface smooth and glabrous, which may become somewhat glossy when wet, but is notably non-viscid. In most specimens, the apex is rounded, although it may be somewhat pointed in some cases.

Hymenium smooth, distributed along the external surface of the basidiocarp, concolorous with the rest.

Flesh yellowish in color and somewhat elastic in consistency, though scant due to the hollow nature of the basidiocarps; it is not as brittle as that of other related species. Practically odorless with a rather bitter taste.

Habitat:

This is a species that appears in autumn forming fascicles of independent, unbranched individuals. It is more characteristic of grassy clearings in various forests than open pastures, fruiting in isolated fascicles in damp areas and sometimes on mosses. It is a rare, uncommon, and by no means abundant species.

Observations:

We consider this to be a species whose identification is relatively straightforward despite its rarity, due to its clustered growth habit, yellow coloration, and notably large size for the genus. Clavaria fragilis is similar in growth form and size, but is white. Other yellow Clavulinopsis species such as Clavulinopsis luteoalba or Clavulinopsis helvola are much smaller.
