Lichenomphalia umbellifera

Morphological Features:

Pileus with a diameter ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 cm; when young, it exhibits a central umbilicate depression, tending to become infundibuliform with age. Color ranges from dark gray to brownish-black tones, fading to paler shades upon drying. The surface, particularly in mature specimens, is strongly striate by transparency, and is additionally dry, smooth, and glabrous. Margin regular, occasionally sulcate.

Lamellae decurrent, paler than the pileus, grayish. Relatively thick and distant, with a black edge in older specimens.

Stipe proportional or slightly longer relative to the pileus diameter, practically the same color as the latter. Hollow or fistulose, smooth and glabrous.

Flesh indistinct, grayish in color, lacking any distinctive odor or taste.

Habitat:

A fungus fruiting in autumn, occurring in bogs or mossy habitats. It is a species poorly documented in the literature, likely due to the limited interest it attracts, as it is quite common and gregarious.

Observations:

Previously assigned to the genus Omphalina until very recently, a genus whose traditional circumscription has been substantially dismantled by modern phylogenetic studies in mycology. Several morphologically similar species exist, such as Arrhenia obscurata or Arrhenia sphagnicola, necessitating microscopic examination for accurate identification. All of them were classified within Omphalina until 2002.
