Study description
Under hazel, holm oak, or oak trees, preferring calcareous soils, with spherical to subspherical, very irregular ascomata bearing a deep basal cavity, 1 to 3 cm in diameter, with a slightly warty reddish-brown surface, a hard brownish gleba with whitish veins, an unpleasant odor upon maturity, and a mild taste.
Hyphae of the outer peridium pseudoparenchymatous, adopting globose to angular shapes, 8 to 15 µm in diameter, with a wall 2 to 4 µm thick, and with abundant reddish-brown pigment inside.
Hyphae of the inner peridium filamentous, thick-walled, septate, intermixed, and 2 to 4 µm wide.
Asci subglobose to ellipsoid, sessile or with a short pedicel, 100 to 140 µm long, 90 to 110 µm wide, containing one to four spores inside.
Ascospores globose to subglobose, pale yellow under the microscope, with ridges 4 to 6 µm high, 30 to 45 µm long excluding ornamentation, 28 to 41 µm wide, and an ornamentation composed of a reticulum of large alveoli, with only 2 to 4 alveoli across the widest diameter of the spore.
