Trichoglossum hirsutum
(Pers.) Boud.

Study description
Growing on the ground among grass and moss, with spatulate or clavate ascomata, usually with an apical longitudinal groove or depression, 3 to 5 cm in height, black, with a fertile head and a sterile hairy stipe occupying two-thirds of the total ascoma length.
Hairs very abundant on the stipe surface, straight, thick-walled, with pointed tips, blackish-brown under the microscope, sparsely septate, 160 to 250 µm long, and 7 to 11 µm wide at the base.
Medullary excipulum of textura intricata, composed of cylindrical, interwoven, septate, thick-walled hyphae, 4 to 10 µm wide, with slight brown intracellular pigment.
Ectal excipulum of textura angularis to textura prismatica, 10 to 18 µm in diameter, with brownish pigment inside.
Asci cylindric-clavate, 8-spored, 260 to 300 µm long, 25 to 35 µm wide, spores arranged in parallel within the ascus, with basal croziers and an amyloid reaction of their apical apparatus in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses cylindrical, septate, moderately thick-walled, usually with a curved hook-like apex, 3 to 5 µm wide, with abundant light brown pigment inside.
Ascospores acicular, smooth, brown under the microscope, mature ones usually with 13 to 15 transverse septa, 120 to 160 µm long, and 5 to 7 µm wide.
