Suillus luteus
(L.) Roussel

Study description
A species associated with pines, especially Pinus sylvestris, although also found under Pinus mugo, with a convex to flattened cap, 5 to 8 cm in diameter, viscid greyish-brown to reddish-brown surface, yellowish pores, a cylindrical stipe provided with a membranous ring in the upper third, with granulations on its surface, without distinctive odour and sweet in taste.
Pileipellis composed of cylindrical hyphae, arranged more or less parallel to interwoven, 2 to 5 µm wide, the superficial ones separated by gelatinisation, with brown intracellular pigment, septate and with simple septa.
On the stipe granulations, terminal hyphae functioning as caulocystidia are present, cylindrical to clavate, fasciculate and with a simple base.
Cheilocystidia very abundant, cylindrical to clavate, hyaline, 40 to 60 µm long and 6 to 8 µm wide.
Pleurocystidia absent.
Basidia cylindrical-clavate, 20 to 25 µm long, 5 to 6 µm wide, with a simple base, 4-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal, smooth, thick-walled, pale yellow under the microscope, 6.5 to 8.5 µm long, 2.8 to 3.5 µm wide, with a very indistinct eccentric apiculus at one end, containing oil droplets (guttules) inside.
