Scutellinia trechispora
(Berk. & Broome) Lambotte

Study description
Species typical of very damp soils, generally growing alongside bryophytes, with disc-shaped, sessile apothecia 0.4 to 0.8 cm in diameter, reddish orange with a pilose margin.
Marginal hairs thick-walled, septate, dark brown under the microscope, 350 to 750 µm long, with a simple to bifurcate base and a basal width of 30 to 50 µm.
Medullary excipulum of textura intricata, with interwoven hyphae 11 to 18 µm wide.
Ectal excipulum of textura globulosa-angularis, formed by subcylindrical to clavate hyphae 65 to 100 µm long and 45 to 80 µm wide, with faint pale brown intracellular pigment.
Asci cylindrical, eight-spored, operculate, 220 to 310 µm long, 25 to 35 µm wide, with uniseriate spore arrangement inside the ascus, basal croziers, and inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses filiform, septate, 3 to 4 µm wide, with apical enlargements of 7 to 9 µm, containing copious orange pigment inside, projecting above the asci.
Ascospores spherical, with coarse warts or spines up to 3 µm or more in height, measuring 13 to 16 µm in diameter (excluding ornamentation), covered over their entire surface with coarse isolated warts, more visible in lactophenol cotton blue.
