On damp decaying wood or on soil organic matter, with sessile, disc-shaped apothecia 0.4 to 1.5 cm across, reddish orange, with the margin fringed with long brown hairs.
Marginal hairs thick-walled, septate, 1.4 to 2.2 mm long, with a branched base, 25 to 50 µm wide at the base.
Asci cylindrical, eight-spored, operculate, 250 to 300 µm long, 18 to 24 µm wide, with uniseriate spore arrangement within the ascus, basal croziers, and inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses filiform, septate, 2.5 to 3.5 µm wide, with apical enlargements of 9 to 12 µm, with orange intracellular pigment, projecting slightly above the asci.
Ascospores ellipsoidal, hyaline, with warts up to 1 µm high, 18 to 22 µm long, 11.5 to 14 µm wide, ornamented with warts coalescing into short ridges, visible only using lactophenol cotton blue.
