Lentinula edodes
(Berk.) Pegler

Study description
General: Lignicolous fungus commonly known as Shiitake, native to East Asia and widely cultivated, with a pleasant odor and flavor.
Pileipellis: Composed of cylindrical, thin- to slightly thick-walled hyphae, arranged more or less parallel to slightly interwoven, containing pale brown intracellular pigment, 3-9 µm wide, septate with clamp connections.
Lamellar edge: Lacking clearly differentiated cheilocystidia, but lined with abundant sterile terminal hyphae of various shapes (fusiform, ventricose, clavate), similar in size to basidia.
Basidia: Clavate, 25-30 x 5-7 µm, with basal clamp connections, 4-spored.
Spores: Ellipsoid to amygdaliform, thin-walled, hyaline, with a distinct eccentric apiculus, containing lipid droplets.
