Study description

General: Formerly known as Peziza badia, featuring cup- or bowl-shaped ascomata with wavy margins, reddish-brown exterior, 3-9 cm in diameter, brittle flesh, and reticulate spores.

Excipulum: Medullary excipulum of textura intricata, composed of hyaline, cylindrical, densely interwoven hyphae 4-10 µm wide, with broader subglobose connecting cells. Ectal excipulum of textura globulosa-angularis, with cylindrical, vesiculose to pyriform thick-walled cells containing abundant brown intracellular pigment; terminal projecting elements measure up to 50 x 40 µm.

Asci: Cylindrical, straight to slightly sinuous towards base, uniseriate, operculate, 8-spored, 325-450 x 13-16 µm, with croziers, strongly amyloid in Melzer's reagent both at the apex and along the upper half of the lateral walls.

Paraphyses: Cylindrical, septate, thin-walled, slightly enlarged at apex, 4-6 µm wide, containing pale brownish-olivaceous pigment, slightly projecting above asci.

Ascospores: Ellipsoid, hyaline, containing 1-2 large guttules accompanied by smaller droplets, ornamented with ridges forming a very irregular and often incomplete reticulum.

Herbarium voucher: JTP2577/25.
