Lachnum virgineum

Description: Ascomata cup-shaped, sessile to short-stipitate, solitary to gregarious, 0.5-2 mm in diameter. Hymenium flat to slightly concave, pure white. Margin and outer surface covered with dense white hairs. Receptacle cupulate, whitish.

Marginal hairs: Cylindrical, straight or slightly flexuous, hyaline, multiseptate, thin-walled to slightly thick-walled, densely and finely granulose to verrucose along their entire length, without apical swellings or crystals, up to 100 µm long, 3.5-5 µm wide.

Excipulum: Medullary excipulum composed of a textura intricata of hyaline, septate, branched hyphae. Ectal excipulum of textura globulosa-angularis to prismatica, hyaline cells, arranged in parallel rows towards the margin.

Asci: Cylindric-clavate, 8-spored, apex rounded to conical, with croziers at base, apical pore intensely amyloid in Melzer's reagent (blue), 40-50 x 3.5-5 µm.

Paraphyses: Lanceolate, acute, septate, hyaline, projecting 10-20 µm beyond asci, 3.5-5 µm wide.

Spores: Cylindrical to fusiform, straight or slightly curved, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, unicellular, biseriate, 6-9 x 1.5-2 µm.
