Hohenbuehelia petaloides
(Bull.) Schulzer

Study description
A sizable species (up to 13 cm), funnel-shaped and split on one side, associated particularly with holm oak forests.
Pileipellis three-layered: an upper layer of parallelly arranged hyphae, 3-5 µm wide, with abundant brown intracellular pigment; beneath this lies a layer of slightly narrower, hyaline, interwoven hyphae widely separated by gelification; underlain by a layer morphologically similar to the upper layer, less pigmented, all septate with clamp connections.
Cheilocystidia and pleurocystidia fusiform, very thick-walled (metuloids), up to 100 µm long, 9-15 µm wide, occasionally with small hyaline apical crystallizations.
Basidia clavate, 20-25 µm long and 5-7 µm wide, with basal clamps, 4-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, with an inconspicuous lateral apiculus at one end, vacuolar internal content, inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
