Adelphella babingtonii

An aquatic or semi-aquatic lignicolous species, occurring on hardwood wood, with disc-shaped apothecia measuring 0.5–1.5 cm in diameter, brown in color.

Subhymenial hyphae corresponding to the medullary excipulum are filamentous, 4–9 µm wide, with an intricate texture.

Ectal excipular hyphae are globose to citriform, 15–40 µm wide, containing slight brown intracellular pigment, and bearing a cylindrical extension forming a long neck 4–6 µm wide.

Marginal hairs are cylindrical and slightly broadened at the apex.

Asci are cylindrical, 8-spored, uniseriate, operculate, measuring 200–360 µm in length and 15–20 µm in width, with basal uncini (croziers).

Paraphyses are filiform with sinuous apices, occasionally bifurcate, septate, 2.5–4 µm wide, with apical swellings up to 7 µm, and contain brownish-ochre intracellular pigment that turns violaceous-gray in Melzer's reagent.

Ascospores are ellipsoid and hyaline, with smooth, thick walls. According to the literature, they measure 17–23 × 11–14 µm, which is smaller than the ascospore dimensions recorded in the present study.
