Dumontinia tuberosa
(Bull.) L.M.Kohn

Study description
A remarkable ascomycete strictly host-specific to wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa). On the rhizomes of this plant, which flowers between March and May, the fungus forms black sclerotia from which cup-shaped apothecia subsequently arise. These apothecia are cupulate, approximately 2 cm in diameter, atop a slender stipe that can reach up to nearly 10 cm in length.
We have had the opportunity to observe and photograph this species on multiple occasions, typically from mid to late April. All photographs (macro and micro) originate from the same locality in Urkabustaiz (Álava). Sincere thanks to friend Javier Fernández for indicating the precise locality where they reliably emerge.
