Scutellinia umbrorum
(Fr.) Lambotte

Study description
A species occurring either on decaying soil organic matter or on wood, with disc-shaped apothecia 0.4 to 1 cm across, orange, with an undulate margin fringed with brown marginal hairs.
Marginal hairs thick-walled, septate, brown under the microscope, with a bifurcate to multifid base, 230 to 950 µm long and 25 to 50 µm wide.
Asci cylindrical, eight-spored, operculate, 205 to 300 µm long, 14 to 21 µm wide, with uniseriate spore arrangement inside the ascus, basal croziers, and inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses filiform, septate, bifurcate at the base, 3 to 4 µm wide, with apical enlargements of 5 to 11 µm, with encrusting yellowish intracellular pigment that darkens in Melzer's reagent, extending only very slightly above the asci.
Ascospores ellipsoidal, hyaline, with warts up to 1 µm high, 20 to 23.5 µm long, 12.5 to 16 µm wide, ornamented with coarse isolated warts that do not coalesce to form a reticulum.
A species very similar to its congener Scutellinia heterosculpturata, the latter having smaller spores (18.8–21.7 × 11.1–13.5 µm according to literature).
