Microscopía de Scutellinia nigrohirtula

Study description

On decaying ground wood that had previously been submerged by river flooding, with sessile, disc-shaped apothecia 0.3 to 1 cm across, reddish orange, with the margin densely fringed with blackish-brown hairs.

Marginal hairs thick-walled, septate, pale brown under the microscope, with a simple base, 150 to 390 µm long and a maximum basal width of 12 to 23 µm.

Medullary excipulum of textura intricata, with filamentous hyphae 6 to 8 µm wide.

Ectal excipulum of textura globulosa-angularis, formed by hyphae 45 to 60 µm long and 20 to 35 µm wide, containing copious yellowish-brown intracellular pigment.

Asci cylindrical, eight-spored, operculate, 220 to 310 µm long, 18 to 23 µm wide, with uniseriate spore arrangement inside the ascus, and inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.

Paraphyses filiform, multiseptate, unbranched, 3 to 5 µm wide, with apical enlargements up to 11 µm, with abundant orange granular intracellular pigment that darkens noticeably in Melzer's reagent, projecting above the asci.

Ascospores ellipsoidal, hyaline, with warts up to 0.6 µm high, 21 to 24 µm long, 15 to 17.5 µm wide, ornamented with warts up to 2 µm wide coalescing to form short ridges.

Herbarium material available: JTP2809/26.
