Sclerogaster compactus
(Tul. & C.Tul.) Sacc.

Study description
A hypogeous fungus with subglobose to slightly irregular basidiomes, small in size, 0.5 to 1.5 cm across, yellowish to pale ochraceous, with a cream to orange gleba, and a fruity odor.
Outer peridial hyphae (exoperidium) filamentous, densely interwoven, 4 to 8 µm thick, thin- to slightly thick-walled, deep yellow under the microscope.
Inner peridial hyphae (endoperidium) pseudoparenchymatous in appearance, with globose hyphae up to 25 µm intermixed with swollen filamentous hyphae, closely compacted.
Basidia very difficult to observe as they collapse upon spore production; clavate, 14 to 18 µm long, 5 to 6 µm wide, and four-spored according to literature.
Spores globose to subglobose, with notably thick and verrucose walls, yellowish under the microscope, with a prominent apiculus at one end, 5.5 to 7 µm long, 4.5 to 6 µm wide, surface covered with coarse warts up to 0.7 µm high.
