Study description
On very damp decaying broadleaf wood, forming dense colonies of globose perithecia 0.6 to 0.9 mm in diameter, black, with a shiny, finely rugose or granular surface, and an ostiole at the apex that opens to release spores.
Peridium with an outer layer of polygonal, angular, thick-walled hyphae, 8 to 15 µm in diameter, with abundant dark brown to black intracellular pigment; beneath these, very similar hyphae that are hyaline or only slightly pigmented.
Asci cylindrical-clavate, eight-spored, 140 to 175 µm long, 12 to 15 µm wide, with spore arrangement inside the ascus biseriate in the upper part to uniseriate below, and inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses filamentous, hyaline, septate, 3 to 5 µm wide, unbranched, projecting considerably above the asci.
Ascospores cylindrical, allantoid, elbow-shaped, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, 22 to 27 µm long, 4 to 5 µm wide, containing abundant oil droplets (guttules) of varying sizes inside.
Herbarium material available: JTP2561/25.
