Study description
Typical of both coniferous and broadleaf forests, of considerable size, with a convex to umbilicate pileus 6 to 18 cm in diameter, white to ochre; creamy-white spore print; short white stipe with brownish stains; herring-like odor and mild to acrid taste, especially in the lamellae.
Cuticle formed by filamentous, densely interwoven hyphae, profusely branched, 4 to 6 µm wide, with some terminal pileocystidioid elements, cylindrical to fusiform, 4 to 8 µm wide, septate with simple septa.
Cheilocystidia subcylindrical to fusiform, with a pointed tip, 40 to 75 µm long and 8 to 12 µm wide.
Pleurocystidia of similar morphology, 50 to 90 µm long and 8 to 10 µm wide; both cheilocystidia and pleurocystidia contain abundant opaque granular content inside.
Basidia clavate, ventricose, 45 to 60 µm long, 14 to 17 µm wide, simple-based, bearing two or four sterigmata (two- or four-spored).
Spores subglobose to ellipsoidal, with warts up to 1.1 µm high, 8.5 to 11 µm long, 7 to 9 µm wide, ornamented with warts coalescing into fine ridges, not forming a complete reticulum.
