Species typical of broadleaf woods, such as Fagus or Quercus, with an applanate to depressed pileus 7 to 10 cm in diameter, pinkish to reddish with a cream center; dark yellow spore print; mild odor and taste mild becoming slightly acrid upon mastication.
Cuticle filamentous, formed by intermixed hyphae 2 to 4 µm wide, with abundant cylindrical to fusiform pileocystidia 7 to 12 µm wide containing dense blackish-grey pigment, septate with simple septa.
Cheilocystidia fusiform, occasionally with an apical appendage, 70 to 100 µm long and 9 to 11 µm wide.
Pleurocystidia scattered, without apical appendage, 50 to 90 µm long and 9 to 12 µm wide; both cheilocystidia and pleurocystidia contain abundant blackish-grey pigment inside.
Basidia clavate, 30 to 45 µm long, 10 to 14 µm wide, without basal clamp connections, four-spored.
Spores subglobose to ellipsoidal, with warts up to 1 µm high, 7.5 to 9.5 µm long, 6.5 to 8 µm wide, ornamented with isolated warts coalescing only into short, separated ridges.
