Study description

Species fruiting under broadleaves, especially in beech forests, with an applanate to centrally depressed pileus 4 to 14 cm in diameter; dark ochre spore print; a short stipe that gives rise to its specific epithet; faint odor and mild taste.

Cuticle formed by cylindrical hyphae 3 to 5 µm wide, sinuous, with some branchings, with terminal hyphae acting as cylindrical to clavate pileocystidia 4 to 7 µm wide, containing greyish intracellular pigment, septate with simple septa.

Cheilocystidia fusiform, without apical appendage, 55 to 80 µm long and 8 to 13 µm wide.

Pleurocystidia scarce, cylindrical to fusiform, 50 to 70 µm long and 7 to 10 µm wide.

Basidia clavate, 45 to 60 µm long, 12 to 14 µm wide, simple-based, bearing two or four sterigmata (two- or four-spored).

Spores subglobose to ellipsoidal, with warts up to 0.8 µm high, 7.5 to 10 µm long, 6.5 to 9.5 µm wide, ornamented with isolated warts connecting into more or less long ridges, but not forming a reticulum.
