Rosellinia corticium
(Schwein.) Sacc.

Study description
With uniperitheciate stromata, densely clustered, bearing globose perithecia 1 to 1.4 mm in diameter, dark brown to black, carbonaceous in appearance, with a conical papillate ostiole, and a thick, persistent common subiculum of violaceous-brown color.
Subicular hyphae cylindrical, thick-walled, with abundant right-angled branching, septate, with copious dark brown intracellular pigment, 3.5 to 6 µm wide.
Asci cylindrical, eight-spored, 130 to 200 µm long, 8 to 10 µm wide, with uniseriate to obliquely overlapping spore arrangement, and an amyloid apical apparatus 7 to 11 µm long and 4 to 6 µm wide.
Paraphyses abundant, filamentous, hyaline, simple, evanescent, tending to disappear with development, 1.5 to 2.5 µm wide, without apical enlargements, projecting considerably above the asci.
Ascospores ellipsoidal to slightly fusiform, inequilateral with one flattened side, dark brown under the microscope, 20 to 28 µm long, 7.5 to 9.5 µm wide, with an oblique to slightly sigmoid germ slit, a hyaline appendage at one or both ends, and generally enveloped by a mucous sheath entirely surrounding the spore.
