Rhizodiscina lignyota
(Fr.) Hafellner

Study description
On damp, decaying broadleaf wood on the ground, with sessile, disc-shaped apothecia 0.4 to 1 mm in diameter, black, carbonaceous in appearance, sprouting scattered but abundantly across the substrate.
Ectal excipulum with hyphae of textura globulosa-angularis, moderately thick-walled, 8 to 18 µm in diameter, with brown intracellular pigment most pronounced in the cell walls.
Asci clavate, eight-spored, hyaline, 40 to 55 µm long, 9 to 12 µm wide, with biseriate to irregular spore arrangement inside the ascus, and inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Interascal tissue consisting of filiform, septate, hyaline, branched pseudoparaphyses, 1.5 to 2.5 µm wide, with slight apical enlargements of 3 to 3.5 µm, projecting above the asci; both asci and pseudoparaphyses are enveloped in a greenish-yellow gelatinous substance characteristic of the species.
Ascospores cylindrical-ellipsoidal to slightly fusiform, thick-walled, two-celled with a central septum, slightly constricted at the septum, greenish brown under the microscope, 9.5 to 12.5 µm long, 4 to 5 µm wide, containing faint oil droplets (guttules) inside.
