(Fr.) E.J.Tian & Matheny

Study description
On decaying fallen conifer logs on the ground, known until recently as Pholiota astragalina, with a convex to flattened pileus 2 to 6 cm in diameter, smooth surface, vivid orange, adnate lamellae, a cylindrical stipe slightly tapered at the base, and bitter taste.
Suprapellis composed of an ixocutis of thin-walled filamentous hyphae 3 to 7 µm wide, separated by gelatinization, hyaline or containing faint yellowish-brown intracellular pigment, septate with clamp connections.
Cheilocystidia cylindrical to fusiform, slightly capitate, 25 to 50 µm long and 4 to 7 µm wide.
Pleurocystidia (chrysocystidia) pyriform to clavate, with an apical papilla and refractive yellowish contents, 20 to 35 µm long and 10 to 15 µm wide.
Basidia cylindrical-clavate, 20 to 25 µm long, 6 to 7 µm wide, clamped at the base, 4-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal to pip-shaped, yellowish-brown under the microscope, slightly thick-walled, 6 to 8 µm long, 4 to 5 µm wide, with a pointed apicular end, a germ pore at the opposite pole, inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
