Pseudomassaria sepincoliformis
(De Not.) Arx

Study description
Species occurring on decaying twigs of Rosa canina (wild dog-rose), with black ascomata only 0.2 to 0.4 mm across, fruiting sparsely yet abundantly over the surface.
Ascomata erumpent, deeply immersed in the substrate, globose to slightly depressed, ellipsoidal in cross-section, with a carbonaceous appearance.
Peridial wall hyphae subglobose to angular, very thick-walled, containing abundant brown intracellular pigment.
Asci cylindrical-clavate, 8-spored, 85 to 100 µm long, 13 to 16 µm wide, with spores arranged slightly biseriately to irregularly, and showing a weak amyloid reaction of the apical apparatus in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses filiform, hyaline, septate, with a uniform width of 1.5 to 2.5 µm.
Ascospores ellipsoidal, 2-celled (bicellular), the upper cell significantly larger than the lower cell and occupying three-quarters of the total spore length; ascospores hyaline, thin-walled, constricted at the septum, and inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Herbarium material available: JTP2663/25.
