Protostropharia luteonitens
(Fr.) Redhead

Study description
Species appearing among grasses in pastures, parks, and lawns, with a conical pileus bearing a central papilla, 1 to 3 cm across, honey-yellow, darker at the centre, viscid surface, blackish-brown lamellae with a whitish edge, a cylindrical stipe whitish above and ochre below the ring, and an unpleasant odour.
Pileipellis an ixocutis of very slender filamentous hyphae 2 to 3.5 µm wide, branched, widely separated by gelatinization, with brown intracellular pigment; subpellis of broader hyphae 5 to 10 µm wide with brown surface encrustations, septate and partly clamped.
Cheilocystidia very abundant, rendering the gill edge sterile, cylindrical to lageniform, flexuous, 35 to 70 µm long and 6 to 11 µm wide.
Pleurocystidia and chrysocystidia absent from gill faces, distinguishing it from Protostropharia semiglobata, with which it is often confused.
Basidia cylindrical, slightly sinuous, 25 to 40 µm long, 9 to 12 µm wide, clamped at the base, predominantly 2-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal, thick- and smooth-walled, brown under the microscope, 15 to 20 µm long, 9 to 11 µm wide, with a small eccentric hyaline apiculus at one end, a distinct central germ pore at the opposite pole, homogeneous inside, non-reactive in Melzer's reagent.
