Peniophora rufa
(Fr.) Boidin

Study description
A corticioid fungus growing on wood of Populus or Salix, forming discrete, cerebriform (wrinkled) basidiomata 3 to 9 mm in diameter, reddish-orange, scattered across the substrate.
Hyphal system monomitic, with only hyaline generative hyphae, difficult to observe, 2.5 to 5 µm wide, thin- to moderately thick-walled, septate with clamp connections.
Lamprocystidia cylindrical to slightly fusiform, 4 to 7 µm wide, thick-walled, completely encrusted in the upper portion, scarcely protruding above the level of the basidia.
Gloeocystidia abundant, large, deeply embedded in the hymenium, fusiform to clavate, 50 to 75 µm long, 9 to 18 µm wide, with dense contents that darken noticeably in sulfovanillin.
Basidia clavate, 40 to 50 µm long, 5 to 6 µm wide, clamped at the base, 4-spored.
Spores cylindrical to allantoid, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, 6.5 to 9.5 µm long, 2 to 3 µm wide, with a lateral apiculus at one end, inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
