Nectria cinnabarina
(Tode) Fr.

Study description
On decaying small twigs of broadleaf trees on the ground, with globose perithecia 0.2–0.4 mm in diameter bearing an apical papilla, rough and glossy surface, cinnabar-red to reddish-brown, clustered in dense caespitose bunches of numerous individuals, densely packed together, colonising entire branches.
Peridial wall hyphae with a textura angularis, irregular, very thick-walled (walls up to 1.5 µm thick), with abundant orange interparietal pigment, measuring 10–25 µm long, reacting with an intense deep blue colour in KOH.
Asci cylindrical to clavate, inoperculate, 8-spored, measuring 75–90 µm long by 8–12 µm wide, with spore arrangement varying from uniseriate to irregularly biseriate, inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses not observed.
Ascospores cylindrical-ellipsoidal to slightly fusiform, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, measuring 14–20 µm long by 5–7 µm wide, mature spores with one median septum and a very slight constriction at the septum, usually containing two coarse oil droplets inside (one in each cell).
