Mycena purpureofusca
(Peck) Sacc.

Study description
Species typical of decaying coniferous wood, with a conical to campanulate pileus 1–4 cm across, dark brown with a whitish margin, whitish adnate lamellae with a distinctive dark violet edge, a cylindrical, hollow stipe of brown colour with violet hues, and the base covered with whitish fibrils.
Cuticle (pileipellis) formed by cylindrical hyphae 2–5 µm wide, widely separated by gelification, with abundant brown encrusting intracellular pigment, the outermost with coarse excrescences up to 6 µm long by 2–4 µm wide, septate and generally clampless.
Hyphae of the outer surface of the stipe 2–3.5 µm wide, with scattered coarse digitiform excrescences.
Cheilocystidia very abundant, subcylindrical, fusiform to clavate, measuring 40–55 µm long by 6–17 µm wide, with abundant purplish-brown intracellular pigment.
Pleurocystidia absent.
Basidia clavate, 25–35 µm long by 10–12 µm wide, 2- or 4-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, measuring 8.5–11.5 µm long by 6–8.5 µm wide, with an inconspicuous apiculus at one end, containing small oil droplets inside, distinctly amyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Herbarium material available: JTP2261/24 and JTP2645/25.
