Mycena epipterygia
(Scop.) Gray

Study description
Species typical of coniferous organic debris, with a campanulate to convex pileus 1–2.5 cm across, creamy brown with a whitish margin, sticky surface, adnate to decurrent lamellae, a cylindrical, hollow, glutinous stipe of yellowish colour, and an odour of rancid meal.
Cuticle (pileipellis) with an ixocutis of superficial hyphae widely separated by gelification, 1–2 µm wide, branched, with diverticulate terminal elements.
Hyphae of the stipe surface heavily gelatinised like the pileipellis, 1.5–3 µm wide, septate and clamped.
Cheilocystidia very abundant, embedded in a gelatinous matrix, measuring 12–28 µm long by 8–10 µm wide, with irregular apical excrescences up to 10 µm long by 1–2 µm wide.
Pleurocystidia absent.
Basidia cylindrical-clavate, 30–40 µm long by 6–8 µm wide, with basal clamps, 4-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal to amygdaliform, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, measuring 7.5–9.5 µm long by 3.5–5 µm wide, with a prominent apiculus at one end, containing lipid droplets inside, amyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Herbarium material available: JTP2333/24.
