Melanoleuca microcephala
(P.Karst.) Singer

Study description
Small-sized species typical of mixed woodland clearings, with a convex to flattened pileus 1 to just over 3 cm across, retaining a central umbo, brown and slightly darker at the centre, a cylindrical greyish-brown stipe, an indistinct (inappreciable) odour, and a sweet taste.
Cuticle (pileipellis) formed by cylindrical, slightly interwoven hyphae 5–8 µm wide, with thin to moderately thickened walls, brown intracellular pigment, septate, with simple septa (without clamp connections).
Cheilocystidia scarce, fusiform to lageniform, measuring 30–45 µm long by 4–7 µm wide, with crystalline apical encrustations.
Basidia clavate, 25–38 µm long by 6.5–9 µm wide, simple-based, generally 4-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal, thin-walled and moderately verrucose, measuring 7–8.5 µm long by 4–5 µm wide, with a discreet eccentric apiculus at one end, containing oil droplets inside, amyloid in Melzer's reagent.
