(Bull.) Murrill

Study description
A large species considering the genus, with a convex to flattened pileus retaining a central umbo, 5–15 cm across, greyish-brown with a darker centre, featuring a characteristic stipe with longitudinal brownish streaks contrasting against a whitish background, a fungal odour, and a sweet, farinaceous taste.
Cuticle (pileipellis) formed by cylindrical, filamentous hyphae 5–8 µm wide, with abundant brown intracellular pigment, branched, septate, and with simple septa (without clamp connections).
Cheilocystidia urticoid, with a broad base and a long neck, measuring 35–55 µm long by 5–9 µm wide at the widest part, and often with the apex encrusted with coarse crystals.
Lamellar trama regular to parallel.
Basidia clavate, 30–40 µm long by 7–10 µm wide, simple-based, generally 4-spored.
Spores ellipsoidal, hyaline, with a slightly verrucose wall, measuring 7–8.5 µm long by 4.5–6 µm wide, containing lipid droplets inside, amyloid in Melzer's reagent.
