Lasiosphaeris hirsuta
(Fr.) A.N.Mill. & Huhndorf

Study description
Substrate: Saprotrophic on decaying decorticated wood in very humid environments.
Ascomata: Perithecia globose, black, 0.3-1 mm in diameter, surface covered with rigid, black spine-like hairs.
Marginal hairs: Brown, thick-walled, gradually becoming hyaline toward the apex, 120-250 µm long with a maximum width of 5-8 µm.
Peridium: Composed of hyphae of textura angularis, thick-walled, 11-16 µm wide, filled with abundant brown intracellular pigment.
Asci: Cylindrical to slightly fusiform, 8-spored, inoperculate, 210-280 x 9-12 µm, spore arrangement biseriate to irregular, with croziers at the base, inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses: Filiform, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, multiseptate, mostly simple and unbranched, 2-4 µm wide, projecting significantly above the asci.
Ascospores: Cylindrical with one curved or geniculate end, hyaline, initially densely guttulate, developing up to 7 transverse septa at maturity with a large central lipid droplet in each cell.
