Lactarius zonarius
(Bull.) Fr.

Study description
General: Associated with evergreen oak (Quercus ilex) woods, pileus concentrically zoned, latex white and unchanging, taste intensely acrid.
Pileipellis: Composed of filamentous, interwoven hyphae 2-4.5 µm wide, separated by gelatinization, septate with simple septa.
Cheilocystidia: Scarce, fusiform, 27-35 x 3-6 µm, with granular contents.
Pleurocystidia: Similar in shape, larger, 30-55 x 4-6 µm.
Basidia: Cylindrical to very slightly clavate, 45-52 x 9-11 µm, base simple, 4-spored.
Spores: Subspherical to ellipsoid, with ridges up to 0.8 µm high slightly interconnected without forming a reticulum, with a hyaline apiculus, amyloid in Melzer's reagent.
