Irpex lacteus
(Fr.) Fr.

Study description
A species found on various broadleaf wood substrates, forming shell-shaped basidiomes with a hymenophore that starts poroid and becomes irpicoid with age.
Dimitic hyphal system: skeletal hyphae very thick-walled, 3-6 µm wide, generally aseptate with occasional simple septa; generative hyphae thin- to moderately thick-walled, 2-4 µm wide, profusely branched, septate with simple septa.
Cystidia scattered, thick-walled, 50-110 µm long and 6-10 µm wide, projecting up to 40 µm above the basidial level, often heavily encrusted with crystals.
Basidia clavate, arising from a candelabra-like branching base, small, 20-30 µm long and 4-6 µm wide, without basal clamps, 4-spored.
Spores small, ellipsoidal to oblong, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, with an inconspicuous lateral apiculus at one end, inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Herbarium material available: JTP2238/24.
