Hymenoscyphus scutula
(Pers.) W.Phillips

Study description
A species characterized by the absence of croziers at the base of the asci and by the cilia present on its spores at both ends.
Marginal hyphae composed of short cylindrical elements with rounded apices, lacking differentiated hairs.
Medullary excipulum of textura intricata, composed of a dense mass of hyaline filamentous hyphae, densely interwoven.
Ectal excipulum with roughly rectangular hyphae, parallelly arranged, hyaline, and thin- to slightly thick-walled.
Asci cylindric-clavate, 8-spored, with biseriate spore arrangement inside, up to 150 µm long and up to 14 µm wide, lacking croziers (with simple basal septa), with an amyloid reaction of their small apical apparatus in Melzer's reagent.
Paraphyses filiform, smooth, hyaline, cylindrical to only very slightly widened at the apex, projecting slightly above the asci.
Ascospores fusiform to navicular, with one end more pointed, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, with characteristic cilia at both ends that are difficult to observe, and containing vacuolar internal content.
