Hymenoscyphus kathiae
(Korf) Baral

Study description
Species developing in very damp substrates, on decaying small fallen twigs, disc-shaped with a short stipe, white to ivory, with yellowish tones in mature specimens, 1.2 to 1.5 mm in diameter, and 1 to 1.3 mm in height.
Marginal hairs short, septate, 30 to 35 µm long, 3 to 4 µm wide, with rounded tips.
Medullary excipulum filamentous, of textura intricata, and ectal excipulum of textura globosa-angularis.
Asci cylindrical to slightly clavate, inoperculate, 8-spored, 75 to 90 µm long, 8 to 10 µm wide, with croziers at their base, showing only a very weak, faintly amyloid reaction of the apical apparatus in IKI or Lugol's solution, without reaction in Melzer's reagent.
Ascospores cylindrical, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, 11.5 to 15.5 µm long, 3.8 to 5 µm wide, containing one or two large lipid droplets inside along with smaller scattered ones; initially unicellular, although in some of these ascospores 1 to 3 septa may become discernible with maturity.
Herbarium material available: JTP2584/25 and JTP2589/25.
