Hapalopilus rutilans
(Pers.) Murrill

Study description
A species infecting hardwoods, particularly Quercus, characterized by an intense and prominent violet or purple reaction on the cap upon application of KOH.
Monomitic hyphal system: context composed of hyaline, thick-walled hyphae, abundantly branched, up to 9 µm wide, mostly smooth, but some partially covered with an amorphous substance and crystals. Tramal hyphae morphologically similar but narrower, up to only 6 µm wide.
Well-differentiated cystidia absent, but scattered fusiform cystidioles present, equal in length to the basidia.
Basidia clavate, 18-22 µm long and 5-6 µm wide, with basal clamps, mostly 4-spored.
Spores subcylindrical to ellipsoidal, very small, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled, inamyloid in Melzer's reagent.
Herbarium material available: JTP2417/25.
