Trichoglossum variabile
(E.J.Durand) Nannf.

Study description
Species of the genus Trichoglossum are subject to taxonomic debate and warrant thorough molecular revision.
Although macroscopically very similar to Trichoglossum hirsutum, T. variabile is microscopically well distinguished by on average somewhat shorter ascospores and especially by the marked variability in the number of septa, which gives the species its epithet.
In our experience, Trichoglossum variabile is significantly rarer than T. hirsutum.
The specimens studied appear almost every year in a landscaped area in Urkabustaiz (Álava) near large specimens of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, usually between January and February.
