Octospora excipulata
(Clem.) Benkert

Study description
A small bryophilous ascomycete typical of previously burnt areas, usually growing on Funaria hygrometrica and previously known under the name Octospora roxheimii. The apothecium is yellow to orange-yellow and rarely exceeds 4 to 5 mm in diameter. The white margin is typically crenulate or dentate, which helps distinguish it from similar species.
It can fruit at any time of year if moisture conditions are suitable. Although referenced on more than one type of moss, to date I have only observed it among Funaria hygrometrica in areas scorched by wildfires or small campfires.
The macroscopic and microscopic images correspond to two collections made in the months of February and December in the Biscayan localities of Zeberio and Orduña, respectively.
