Mycosarcoma maydis
(DC.) Bref.

Study description
A parasitic fungus that grows on corn kernels, known as corn smut, or in Mexico as huitlacoche, where it is a highly regarded culinary delicacy.
In its early stages of development it appears as an amorphous greyish mass that eventually turns brown once the teliospores have matured.
This species can be found in late summer, when the ears of corn are ready for harvest.
The microscopic study corresponds to a collection kindly provided by Ángel Olabarria from his maize field in Orozko (Bizkaia).
Additional photographs are attached from a subsequent find in the municipality of Amurrio (Álava).
