Morchella vulgaris
(Pers.) Gray

Study description
A Morchella of medium to large size within the genus. Characterized by its cerebriform pileus (cap), lacking a vallecula, and very disorganized ridges, blackish grey to greyish, becoming pale grey to yellowish at maturity. The stipe is short relative to the pileus and ends in a very pronounced basal enlargement (elephant-foot).
It is a vernal species, like most of its congeners, appearing mainly between April and May in riparian forests, fundamentally under Fraxinus and Populus, though it may also make an appearance on burned ground.
The specimens studied in this work originate from several collections made in April in the locality of Zigoitia (Álava) and Valle de Manzanedo (Burgos), under Fraxinus excelsior and Populus spp., respectively.
