Helvella calycina
Skrede, T.A.Carlsen & T.Schumach.

Study description
Helvella calycina is a newly established species, but in most cases a familiar taxon, previously known in the Iberian Peninsula as Helvella costifera, which appears to occur exclusively in northern Europe. It also closely resembles Helvella dalgeri, which is darker and associated with holm oak forests, and Helvella retinervis.
The species treated here usually fruits in spring across various habitats. The prominent ribs extending almost to the cap margin and its coloration ranging from dark grey in early stages to greyish-brown at maturity provide valuable clues for identification. However, the strong similarities with the aforementioned species must be kept in mind.
The specimens presented below were collected in April and May in the municipality of Zalduondo (Álava), growing in a humid runoff area periodically washed by rainwater, under Quercus faginea and Cedrus atlantica.
